Garden Catering CT Dinner

On our way down to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, for Spring Break senior year, Kiyo and I stopped and spent a night with my friend Laura in Fairfield, Connecticut. She brought us for a no-frills, unhealthy yet satisfying dinner at the incongruously named Garden Catering.

Garden Catering Cones

Famous for their chicken nuggets (made fresh in-house) and “cones,” oddly shaped, creamy tater tots, this Connecticut chain is like a homey version of fast-food.

Garden Catering Wrap

I fooled myself into feeling a bit healthier by ordering a chicken wrap, but really, who was I kidding? This place left us feeling full and a bit heavy, but also happy and for “fast food,” this is a great option. While I would never, ever eat or enjoy the mystery-meat nuggets at a place like McDonald’s, I enjoyed Garden Catering’s tasty white-meat nuggets and unusual fried cones.

Strange Food Saturdays, St. Patrick’s Day Edition: Green Ketchup at Burger King

On St. Patrick’s Day last year, Kiyo and I drove all the way back to Saratoga Springs from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was quite the trip and we were sad to miss out on the usually rowdy holiday; so when we heard on the radio that Burger King was giving away free French fries and green ketchup, we decided to treat ourselves.

The ketchup tasted like regular ketchup and although it was fun, I’d prefer not ingesting  chemicals unnecessarily; look how green my tongue turned! Green ketchup is something I remember fondly as a child of the nineties, but ultimately I think it’s best to drop this green-dyed food tradition, unless said food is naturally dyed. This year, I’m thinking about trying out McDonalds’ Shamrock Shake, which I’m sure is equally unhealthy. What do you think? Has anyone tried it / is it worth it? The medium shake has 660 calories! Those calories are probably better saved for beer, am I right?

Skittles Darkside, Philadelphia

Skittles Darkside

On our first-ever visit to the much-hyped Wawa in Philadelphia, Kiyo and I found these new Skittles. Since we both enjoy Skittles, we decided to give them a try. Side note: Wawa is basically a bigger and better version of 7-11 (with the exception, of course, of Hawaii’s 7-11s, since those are pretty awesome).

Skittles Darkside

The new Skittles flavors include:

  • Pomegranate (red) – this tasted pretty much like artificial pomegranate, we liked it.
  • Dark Berry (purple) – this tasted like the regular purple Skittle. No complaints.
  • Forbidden Fruit (blue) – this tasted like fruit punch, but not as full of cherry as usual. It was pretty good.
  • Blood Orange (coral) – This tasted surprisingly similar to real blood orange. I almost tasted some olive oil in there as well, but maybe that was just my imagination.
  • Midnight Lime (green) – lemon / lime flavors are not my favorite in candy, so this one wasn’t a standout.

Overall, I highly approve of this new assortment and hope it lasts!

Chinese Food, Sturgis

Chinese Food Sturgis

Sometimes you just get a craving for Chinese food and even when the food is actually bad, it still satisfies. This is exactly what happened to Zan and me in Sturgis while wandering around the motorcycle rally. We were famished and greasy, salty Chinese food just sounded amazing, so we bought a heaping plate to share. It included fried rice, noodles with vegetables and a big kebab of chicken (no idea why it was orange). It was definitely more American-Chinese than authentic Chinese, and I wouldn’t ever think of this meal again, but at the time it hit the spot.

The Pit Authentic BBQ, Raleigh

When Kiyo and I drove down to South Carolina this spring, we stopped for a night in Raleigh, North Carolina. I had read about The Pit somewhere (they have had a fair amount of press, so I don’t remember where I learned about them) and so we knew we had to stop there for some good, authentic Southern BBQ fare for lunch.

Kiyo and I shared a big plate of pulled pork and brisket, which came with a few sides. We also ordered extra sides, and fried green tomatoes. The meat also came with a soft biscuit (my favorite!) and hush puppies, which I’d never heard of before. They are delicious little fried corn fritters. They look like tater tots, but taste like fried cornbread (much more delicious than tater tots).

Macaroni and cheese and baked beans were our first two sides. Everything had so much flavor, and you could tell it’d been cooking for a long time; it was all how Kiyo always says he likes his food cooked, “low and slow.” The brisket was my favorite.
